PTFE
Available formats: Bars, Tubes, and Plates
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) commonly known by the trade name Teflon and is a polymer similar to polyethylene, in which hydrogen atoms have been replaced by fluorine atoms.
PTFE is a particularly versatile opaque white ivory plastic fluoropolymer. It is manufactured by free radical polymerization of many tetrafluoroethene molecules and is suitable for a wide range of applications in industries as diverse as the aerospace industry, the food and beverage industry, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications.
PTFE is commonly known as Teflon and offers remarkable non-stick properties in kitchen utensil applications such as cooking pans and baking sheets.
The cleaning of the equipment can also be reduced in some cases, since a layer of PTFE does not moisten, which facilitates the self-cleaning of the parts.
And Teflon textile finishes can even help the environment, since, when applied to the fabric, they repel water and oil stains, which reduces the need to use dry cleaning, and fabrics also dry more quickly, with less energy and drying. They last longer due to reduced wear.
With the added advantages that PTFE is not toxic, it has only a minor contraindication for humans due to polymer smoke fever (only if the temperature of any Teflon-coated pan reaches 260 degrees C) and is approved by the FDA and is safe for food, this material really is of great benefit in many different areas.
Applications
The biggest advantage of PTFE is its versatility, and the variety of applications in so many products and different industries for this material is amazing.
The use of PTFE can have enormous benefits in manufacturing and engineering, not only in the manufacture of pipes or liners to handle or store corrosive chemicals, but also in the coating of parts such as bearings or screws to increase the life of the parts and the machinery they are in. part of.
A PTFE coated screw will be corrosion resistant, due to the PTFE's ability to repel water and oil, and it will be lubricated by the material to drive smoothly to any surface to which it is holding, with reduced friction, which will result in less wear on both the screw and the screw. The surface, and a safer and more durable finish.
Friction and wear can also be factors with the bearings, and a PTFE layer can provide the same benefits as with the coating screws, with the additional advantage that the coating will also be heat resistant.
It is clear that the most durable and high-performance parts can increase the efficiency of any machinery, reduce the need to constantly acquire spare parts, saving money and the time needed to adapt replacements, as well as reducing waste. This will also reduce maintenance needs as equipment failure is less likely, and also reduces, or even eliminates, any expensive manufacturing downtime due to failures or repairs.
